This is another place during our Kundasang trip that we did not expect to like as much as we did.
The scenic resort has a strategic location not far from Kinabalu Park too. What we liked most about this place was the surroundings. But it didn’t hurt that the food was good too.

First Impressions
If you’re using a navigation app, this place is not hard to find. The entrance is up a slope. This leads to their open-air visitor car park which is surrounded by their beautiful landscaping.
A short walk from the car park, is the entrance to the resort. You do have to climb up some steps to reach the entrance but it’s relatively wheelchair-friendly since they have ramps too.
The construction of the restaurant utilizes a lot of hardwood. And we can see this from the deck that leads all the way from the entrance and on to the front of the restaurant.
Glass walls make up most of the restaurant. If it wasn’t such a misty day, we imagine the views from the restaurant would’ve been absolutely stunning.
As it were, all we saw from the windows throughout our visit was an entirely white sky.
The restaurant has table setups to fit groups of various sizes. It feels cool inside even though they don’t have any air conditioning on. This might be a different story on a sunny day.
What We Ordered Here (For Lunch)
The lunch menu wasn’t available until 12pm and since we were already hungry at 11:30am, we got a couple starters – salted egg popcorn chicken and eggplant chips. Both dishes tasted just as good as they looked. They are crispy without being too oily. Plus, they are not too salty.
We got lamb stew and nasi goreng kodop. The rice mains we ordered, however, would have been a lot better if the accompanying rice wasn’t so soggy.
But the lamb stew is well done, and we do recommend it even if it costs a little more than other mains here.
Overall, the drinks were not bad – our watermelon juice was pure and not diluted with a lot of sugar.
Pricing
This is not a budget venue as you can probably tell from the look of the place. Mains cost a lot more than RM20 here.
But it’s cheaper than dining at Ligawu Restaurant over at Kinabalu Park although we highly recommend that eatery too!
Portions at the Kloud Restaurant are not stingy. And in general, the food quality is not bad. Moreover, they do appear to make their sauces from scratch.
For our 2 mains, 2 starters and 3 drinks, we spent around RM150.
Coffee & Dessert
If you order coffee at the restaurant, the same coffee barista from the café will deliver the coffee right up to the restaurant.
We chose to go back down to the garden to get coffee at the café instead. You can really feel the breeze when you sit out here. Next to this café is an open-air terrace with high tables and chairs. Pine trees surround this deck – hence the name, the Pine Deck.
Feeling full from lunch, we got 2 coffees and one slice of cake to share. There was an occasion to celebrate too since it was someone’s birthday soon.
We liked the coffee. The chocolate cake we ordered wasn’t bad either.
Conclusion
Even if the weather wasn’t ideal for viewing Mt Kinabalu, we still greatly enjoyed our visit at Kloud Restaurant, Bar & Café in the Mountain Valley Resort.
If we ever come back to Kundasang, this is a place we will revisit for the natural surroundings. We might consider staying here too to better savor the classic charm of the resort.
